Does anyone know if it is possible to set up your recipes so that people can leave a star rating without a comment? Would love to hear if this is something others have done or not done.

It depends on the recipe card plug in you are using. I know Tasty recipes does not allow you to do this, but WP Recipe Maker does allow you to change this in their settings.
