Getting to know you - fave summer activity!

I thought it’d be fun to learn more about others on the forum, so I figured I’d start doing “getting to know you” threads!

First up, since the first official day of summer is tomorrow: what is your favorite summer activity?

I’ll post mine below - post yours in the comments too!

My favorite summer activity is probably hiking. Trails in the PNW are often pretty muddy in the spring but by the time summer has arrived they’re usually dry and, at least in the early summer, everything is still green and pretty.

Definitely eating fruit as it’s the best time of year for it - blueberries, raspberries, peaches, cherries, nectarines, pluots, and at the end of summer apples.

I unfortunately struggle with seasonal affective disorder in the summer. It’s not as common as having it in winter but there are many of us who get depressed because of excessive sunlight, heat, and/or humidity.

@taryn I looked at your past July weather and it looks way more pleasant for hiking than it does where I am from. Maybe I need to spend a summer there! How’s the humidity in July?

@eatlikenooneelse - it’s really rare for it to be humid in Seattle in the summer. Of course it’s humid when it’s raining, but even then it’s not the cloying, oppressive humidity you see in the South.

I agree with Taryn! I live about an hour and a half north of her, closer to the Canadian Border in the San Juan Islands. Most years, the San Juans actually get more days of sunshine than California, without the heat and humidity. Like she said its not cloying, and when it is muggy at least it isn’t hot on top of that. You should definitely spend a Summer here, there is so much to do!

I love going to the beach and the Farmers Market. We have so many great markets in my area, sometimes its hard to decide which one to go to. I live in a group of islands north of Seattle, and I also love taking the ferry to some of the other islands to hike and hang out on the beach. The ferry ride is about an hour to get anywhere, and the scenery is beautiful and very relaxing. There are also numerous festivals in my area this time of year that are always fun. But I have to say a day spent on the beach is probably my favorite thing of all!

@taryn its so weird, every time I get out to the other islands I discover something new! There is a lot to these little islands. You need to come back up soon!

I’ve only been to Seattle once, and it was in July. Definitely perfect hiking weather!

And I love all the summer activities mentioned so far: Hiking, fruit, and markets… I’d maybe swap camping for picnics and add a cold glass of Chenin to the list. :joy:

@nonguiltypleasures - our first camping trip this summer is actually at a winery so I might be doing something similar!

We spend all summer RV camping, hiking, and paddleboarding. Pretty much anything that gets us outdoors and enjoy the few months of nice weather we get in Washington.

My favorite summer activity is pool/river time. We love being in the water, especially a sandbar on the Mississippi.
